Disallowing variables in math response

I’m asking students to identify the coefficient in an expression.
Right now, if I ask them to identify the coefficient from the expression 3xy
The correct answer should be 3
BUT
Answers of 3x or 3y or 3xy are being counted as “correct”

Is there a way to fix this without resorting to multiple choice format?
