I think the answer is a no but just curious if anyone has had any luck with getting some pattern matching going for \sum or the like?

There are not, and may not be any hacky ways of tricking the CL, as substituteLatex won’t work either.

Thanks, thought as much. Hopefully there’ll be some progress with some of those patterns and the documentation.
