Hello,
I am creating an activity in which I want students to type the multiplication sign into a Math Input.
When I preview the activity, if I type “x” then it appears as the variable x. If I type * or select it from the onscreen keyboard then it appears as a multiplication dot, which my students will not recognise.
I would like it to appear as the cross symbol.
Is there a setting I can change, or something I can do in the computational layer, that will make typing or selecting * produce a cross symbol rather than the dot ?
Thank you for any help.
I don’t know of a way to change the default way in which the multiplication shows up (but maybe someone else knows). On a PC you can hold down the Alt key while typing the numbers 0215 and it will produce the multiplication symbol you are referring to - which the math input component recognizes as multiplication. You could provide the symbol as the initialLatex or in a separate Note on each screen so that students could copy/paste it…? Maybe that is more difficult than just explaining to them that the dot is another way of indicating the same operation, but this could serve as a potential work-around.
Dear Scott, thank you very much for this suggestion, and taking the time to produce the example. I’d still be keen to hear if the default can be changed but your suggestion gives me a way forward. Best wishes, Steven
Typing the word cross while in a math response field generates the symbol.
