Hi everyone, I made this activity for students to use their understanding of mean, median, mode, distribution, and range to make informed decisions and to elicit discussion about how each one can either be helpful or sometimes misleading.
I’m not actually a math teacher anymore, but I’ve done this with actual envelopes in my classroom, and it’s a lot of fun (and a little chaotic). I just made this to study/practice for an interview at Desmos.
If anyone wants to use it, I can make it nicer since I have some notes to myself scattered throughout, and some more stuff should be hidden when previous slides haven’t been answered.

Hi Julianna,
It is a nice activity; I picked the red envelope, held on to it till the end and was rewarded with a $200 prize.
I have one thought and one question for you.
A thought. For a distribution like that, maybe it would more convenient to use the logarithmic scale for the x-axis. Otherwise, all your results will be crowded around zero, with a single 5000 on the left.
A question. How do you get an interview at Desmos?
Thank you in advance,
Alexander
Thank you, good choice! Yeah, I really struggled with how best to scale the x-axis. I thought maybe an animation where it starts at 0-250 or so and then zooms out to 0-5000. Do you know how to make it a logarithmic scale on Desmos?
I just applied through the Amplify Careers page.
