Gray square vs. dash on the dashboard

I have a screen that only has a note component, and I see that some students have a dash in their box for that screen on the summary view of the dashboard, and others just have a blank, gray square.

I’ve read that the dash means there is nothing to do on that screen, but in this case, what does a gray square mean? Does it mean the student has yet to access that screen? Knowing this would be helpful as I try to determine what content certain students have (or have not) looked at.

Thanks.

I believe the blank square means the student hasn’t viewed that screen yet, while the dash means they have landed on that screen at some point. Yesterday I had a screen on an activity that had a note and a button, and I received the dash whether or not the student pressed the button.
